Πρόκειται για μια προσπάθεια να αναδειχθεί ως προορισμός η περιοχή των λόφων δυτικά της Ακρόπολης, οι οποίοι διαδραμάτισαν κρίσιμο ρόλο στην ιστορία της πόλης και στη διαμόρφωση του σημερινού χαρακτήρα της.
Μέσα από λίγες εικόνες και με οδηγό τη γλώσσα μας, η οποία δημιούργησε λέξεις με οικουμενική σημασία, ο επισκέπτης καλείται να αναζητήσει πληροφορίες ή παροτρύνεται να περπατήσει σε μέρη που το όνομά τους είναι ιστορία: Άρειος Πάγος, Πνύκα, Λόφος των Μουσών, Κοίλη Οδός, Αστεροσκοπείο, Πετράλωνα, Θησείο, Ναός του Ηφαίστου. Διαδρομές εκτός πεπατημένης, ταξίδια στο χώρο και το χρόνο με το βάρος δεκάδων αιώνων.
Η περιοχή δυτικά της Ακρόπολης είναι ο ιδανικός τόπος ώστε να μυηθεί ο επισκέπτης της πόλης στη διαχρονική ιστορία της, από την μακρινή ως την κλασική αρχαιότητα κι από εκεί μέχρι τα πρώτα χρόνια της νεαρής πρωτεύουσας του νεοσύστατου κράτους έως και σήμερα. Μια «διαδρομή» σαν ένα καλειδοσκόπιο που καταλήγει στο ρολόι – ξυπνητήρι του Πλάτωνα να σημαίνει τα σημαντικά που ισορροπεί επιδέξια ανάμεσα στην τεχνολογία και τον πολιτισμό και συνδέει το ένδοξο παρελθόν με το ελπιδοφόρο μέλλον του τόπου.
Την έκθεση «Δυτικά της Αθήνας» επιμελήθηκαν οι Πωλ και Μπελίντα Φυρός, ιδρυτές του Μουσείου, την οργάνωση και το Συντονισμό για το Μουσείο Ηρακλειδών είχε η Ελένη Νομικού, Γενική Διευθύντρια του ΜΗ, τον σχεδιασμό των γραφιστικών είχαν η Αλεξάνδρα Παπαδημούλη και ο Γιάννης Νάκας, ενώ το βίντεο επιμελήθηκε ο Παντελής Μήτσιου, σε υλικό του Γιώργου Καψάλη. Την οργάνωση και το συντονισμό για το Διεθνή Αερολιμένα Αθηνών ανέλαβε η Χαρά – Ελένη Μητσοτάκη, Τομεάρχης Δημοσίων Σχέσεων & Πολιτισμού.
