Η Διεθνής Ημέρα Μουσείων καθιερώθηκε το 1977 από το Διεθνές Συμβούλιο Μουσείων (ICOM), στην προσπάθεια να αναδειχθεί ο ρόλος των μουσείων στη σύγχρονη κοινωνία. Κάθε χρόνο η μέρα αυτή είναι αφιερωμένη σε ένα συγκεκριμένο θέμα. Το θέμα του φετινού εορτασμού είναι “Μουσεία για την Ισότητα: Ποικιλομορφία και Κοινωνική Συνοχή”. Το μήνυμα αυτής της επετείου είναι να γίνουν τα μουσεία φορείς πολιτισμικών ανταλλαγών “με σκοπό την ενίσχυση της μόρφωσης, την προώθηση της αμοιβαίας κατανόησης, την ειρήνη και τη συνεργασία μεταξύ των λαών”.
Λόγω της πανδημίας του κορονοϊού COVID-19, τα περισσότερα μουσεία έχουν κλείσει για το κοινό, όμως συνεχίζουν το έργο τους μέσα από ψηφιακές δράσεις και εφαρμογές.
