Περπατώντας μέσα στα στενά της πόλης συναντάμε ένα κομψό κτίσμα με επιβλητική αρχιτεκτονική και ιδιαίτερο χρώμα. Το κτίσμα αυτό είναι ο Πύργος του Μάρκελλου. Κρίνοντας από την αρχιτεκτονική του κτιρίου, συμπεραίνουμε ότι οικοδομήθηκε κατά το 17ο αιώνα. Το 1802, ανακαινίσθηκε από τον πρόκριτο και αργότερα βουλευτή, Σπύρο Μάρκελλο, αγωνιστή της Επανάστασης του ΄21 και μέλος της Φιλικής Εταιρείας, από τον οποίο πήρε το όνομά του.
Θεωρείται ότι αποτελούσε τμήμα οχυρωματικού έργου, με σκοπό την προστασία του λιμανιού και παρατηρητήριο των Ενετών. Κατά τη διάρκεια της Επανάστασης, εκεί φιλοξενήθηκαν γνωστοί αγωνιστές και πολιτικοί, όπως ο Γ. Κουντουριώτης, ο Ι. Κωλλέτης, ο Κ. Φαβιέρος, ο Ν. Μέξης και άλλοι.
Το 1826, στεγάστηκε εκεί η Διοικητική Επιτροπή, ενώ το 1827, αποτέλεσε έδρα της Αντικυβερνητικής Επιτροπής. Από τον Ιανουάριο του 1828 έως και το τέλος του 1829, το διάστημα δηλαδή που η Αίγινα ήταν η πρωτεύουσα του νεοσύστατου ελληνικού κράτους, ο Πύργος χρησιμοποιήθηκε για τη φιλοξενία υπουργών της κυβέρνησης.
Σήμερα, το κτίριο ανήκει στο Δήμο της Αίγινας και στεγάζει το Πνευματικό Κέντρο του Δήμου και το Κέντρο Κοινωνικού Προβληματισμού “Σπύρος Αλεξίου”. Επίσης, χρησιμοποιείται για τη φιλοξενία εκθέσεων και πολιτιστικών εκδηλώσεων, κατά τη διάρκεια των οποίων είναι ανοιχτό για το κοινό.
