Οι Kalfayan Galleries (Χάρητος 11, Κολωνάκι, Αθήνα) παρουσιάζουν την ατομική έκθεση του Κωστή Βελώνη με τίτλο ‘Ghost Beggar’. Για πρώτη φορά ο καλλιτέχνης παρουσιάζει σε μία έκθεση έργα που ανταποκρίνονται σε όλο το φάσμα των εικαστικών του μέσων: γλυπτά, σχέδια σε χαρτί και έργα σε καμβά.
Η ιστορική φιγούρα του Πιερότου (Pierrot), ο οποίος έχει υποστεί συνεχείς μεταμορφώσεις, αλλά παραμένει δέσμιος της λευκής εμφάνισης και άβουλης στάσης του είναι στο επίκεντρο των γλυπτών, των σχεδίων και των ζωγραφικών έργων της έκθεσης του Κωστή Bελώνη. Με τη γνώριμη παθητικότητά του, ο Πιερότος προσιδιάζει στον ανώνυμο πολίτη που εξαφανίζεται μέσα στο πλήθος. Από αυτήν την οπτική στο σύνολο τους, τα έργα σε αυτήν την έκθεση λειτουργούν ως δραματικές ασκήσεις εσωστρέφειας στο πολιτικό χώρο. Μέσα από τη ρητορική της λευκότητας ο Βελώνης επιχειρεί να ανοίξει ένα διάλογο με το ζήτημα της ριζικής ετερότητας, το απόλυτο άλλο το οποίο μπορεί να αφορά και τον ίδιο τον εαυτό. Σε αυτό το σημείο, η φιγούρα του θεατρικού πιερότου με τη λευκή πούδρα στο πρόσωπό του η οποία τονίζεται από τη χλωμάδα ενός ετερόφωτου φεγγαριού γίνεται όχημα για κάποιες σκέψεις που αφορούν ένα ευρύ φάσμα αναφορών, από τη σχέση της γλυπτικής με την αρχική καταγωγή του όρου του Clown και τη σχέση του με τον όρο Clot (σβώλος, γρουμπούλι) καθώς και τη σημειολογία του λευκού στο σχεδιασμό ενδυμάτων.
Ο τίτλος της έκθεσης προέρχεται από την εμφάνιση κάποιων ασπροβαμμένων ζητιάνων στους κεντρικούς δρόμους της Αθήνας προς τα τέλη του 2010 οι οποίοι , κατηφείς και αμίλητοι, τυλιγμενοι μ’ ένα λευκό σεντόνι, ζητούσαν ελεημοσύνη από τους περαστικούς χωρίς τη συνήθη ακροβατική δεξιοτεχνία των κλόουν και των διασκεδαστών δρόμου. Αποδυναμωμένοι, πένθιμοι και άβουλοι συνεισφέραν μ’ έναν ειρωνικό τρόπο στην παράδοση της φιγούρας του πιερότου που επιδιώκει την αυτοκατάργησή του και περιφέρεται ως φάντασμα.

O Κωστής Βελώνης γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα όπου ζει και εργάζεται. Σπούδασε πολιτισμικές και ανθρωπιστικές σπουδές (MRes) στο London Consortium (Birkbeck College, ICA, AA, Tate) και Arts Plastiques/ Esthétiques στο Université Paris 8 (Maitrise, D.E.A). Είναι Διδάκτωρ Αρχιτεκτονικής του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου και Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής στην Α.Σ.Κ.Τ. Το έργο του εστιάζει στην ανάδειξη των αντιφάσεων που προκύπτουν από την κοινωνική διάσταση της έννοιας της ελευθερίας όπως και στον αναπροσδιορισμό της ηθικής μέσα από την εμπειρία της ιδιωτικότητας. ΒOZAR, Βρυξέλλες. Monash University Museum of Art, Μελβούρνη κ.α. Το 2017 ο οργανισμός ΝΕΟΝ, στα πλαίσια του ‘City Project’ διοργάνωσε ατομική έκθεση του καλλιτέχνη με τίτλο ‘Puppet Sun’. To 2019 η μεγάλων διαστάσεων εγκατάσταση με τον τίτλο ‘Life Without Tragedy’, η οποία υλοποιήθηκε μετά από ανάθεση και παραγωγή του Onassis Culture, εγκαινιάστηκε στο Astor Place στη Νέα Υόρκη, στα πλαίσια του ‘Onassis Festival 2019: Democracy is coming’ και στη συνέχεια παρουσιάστηκε στο Governors Island στη Νέα Υόρκη. Έργα του βρίσκονται σε σημαντικές Ιδιωτικές και Μουσειακές Συλλογές, όπως μεταξύ άλλων στο ΕΜΣΤ όπου και παρουσιάζεται ως τμήμα της έκθεσης της μόνιμης συλλογής του Μουσείου.
