Η 21η Μαΐου κηρύχθηκε το 2002 από τη Γενική Συνέλευση του Οργανισμού Ηνωμένων Εθνών ως Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Πολιτιστικής Διαφορετικότητας για το Διάλογο και την Ανάπτυξη, με στόχο την αναγνώριση της πολιτιστικής ποικιλομορφίας και της αναγνώρισης, επίσης, ότι ο πολιτισμός είναι καθοριστικός παράγοντας για την αειφόρο ανάπτυξη.
Με αφορμή τη σημερινή ημέρα, ο ΟΗΕ απευθύνει έκκληση στα κράτη-μέλη, τις διακυβερνητικές και μη κυβερνητικές οργανώσεις να διοργανώσουν εκδηλώσεις με σκοπό να διευρυνθεί η γνώση των λαών για τον παγκόσμιο πολιτιστικό πλούτο και την αξία της πολιτισμικής διαφορετικότητας.
