Ο Θανάσης Βέγγος ήταν Έλληνας κωμικός ηθοποιός του κινηματογράφου και του θεάτρου και σκηνοθέτης. Έχει παίξει σε 126 ταινίες, σε 52 από τις οποίες ως πρωταγωνιστής και έχει σκηνοθετήσει (πρωταγωνιστώντας ταυτόχρονα) ακόμη 7 ταινίες. Θεωρείται ένας από τους πιο δημοφιλείς κωμικούς του ελληνικού κινηματογράφου. Ταυτίστηκε με την εικόνα του αεικίνητου ανθρώπου, μέχρι και σήμερα λέμε “Τρέχω σαν τον Βέγγιο!”. Χαρακτηριστική ατάκα του “καλέ μου άνθρωπε!”, μια ατάκα που τον χαρακτήριζε προσωπικά, καθώς ξεχώριζε για το ήθος και τη σεμνότητά του. Παρά το αστείρευτο ταλέντο του, δεν ήταν ποτέ “σταρ”, αλλά ο άνθρωπος της διπλανής πόρτας.
Γεννήθηκε στο Νέο Φάληρο στις 29 Μαΐου 1927. Λόγω οικονομικών προβλημάτων αναγκάστηκε να εργαστεί από πολύ μικρός για να στηρίξει την οικογένειά του. Την περίοδο 1948-1950 υπηρέτησε τη θητεία του ως “ανεπιθύμητος” στρατιώτης στη Μακρόνησο, όπου γνωρίστηκε με τον γνωστό σκηνοθέτη Νίκο Κούνδουρο. Το 1954, έκανε την πρώτη του εμφάνιση στον κινηματογράφο, στην ταινία “Μαγική Πόλη” του Κούνδουρου. Τα επόμενα πέντε χρόνια που ακολούθησαν έπαιξε μικρούς ρόλους, ενώ εργαζόταν παράλληλα ως φροντιστής στα κινηματογραφικά πλατό. Την περίοδο αυτή εμφανίστηκε σε μερικές από τις πιο ιστορικές ταινίες του ελληνικού κινηματογράφου, όπως “Ο δράκος”, “Διακοπές στην Αίγινα”, “Μανταλένα”, “Ο Ηλίας του 16ου”, “Ποτέ την Κυριακή”.
Το 1959, πήρε άδεια ασκήσεως επαγγέλματος, όχι από Σχολή, αλλά ως εξαιρετικό ταλέντο με εξετάσεις σε ειδική επιτροπή. Την ίδια χρονιά έλαβε μέρος στην πρώτη του θεατρική παράσταση, στην επιθεώρηση “Ομόνοια πλατς-πλουτς”, μαζί με τους Νίκο Ρίζο και Γιάννη Γκιωνάκη. Το 1960, έπαιξε τον πρώτο του μεγάλο ρόλο στην ταινία “Οι δοσατζήδες”, μαζί με τον Νίκο Σταυρίδη.
Τα επόμενα χρόνια συνεργάστηκε κυρίως με τον σκηνοθέτη Πάνο Γλυκοφρύδη, ανέπτυξε τον τύπο του αεικίνητου και άρχισε να γίνεται πολύ δημοφιλής. Οι ταινίες “Ψηλά τα χέρια Χίτλερ”, “Μην είδατε τον Παναή”, “Ζήτω η τρέλλα!”, “Πολυτεχνίτης κι ερημοσπίτης”, τον καθιέρωσαν στη συνείδηση του κοινού.
Το 1964, ίδρυσε τη δική του εταιρεία παραγωγής ΘΒ-Ταινίες Γέλιου. Την περίοδο 1965-1969, συνεργαζόμενος με τον Πάνο Γλυκοφρύδη και τον Ερρίκο Θαλασσινό, γύρισε τις καλύτερες, κατά γενική ομολογία, ταινίες του, όπως “Φανερός πράκτωρ 000”, “Τρελός, παλαβός και Βέγγος”, ¨Ποιός Θανάσης;”.
Συνέχισε την καριέρα του συνεργαζόμενος με τον σκηνοθέτη Ντίνο Κατσουρίδη. Το 1971, στο Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης, η ταινία “Τί έκανες στον πόλεμο Θανάση;”βραβεύτηκε από κριτικούς και κοινό. Το 1983, αποφάσισε να αποσυρθεί για λίγα χρόνια από τον κινηματογράφο. Τη δεκαετία του 1980 ασχολήθηκε με το γύρισμα βιντεοταινιών και της τηλεοπτικής σειράς “Βεγγαλικά”, που προβλήθηκε το 1988. Το 1990, εμφανίστηκε στη σειρά του ΑΝΤ1 “Αστυνόμος Θανάσης Παπαθανάσης”.
Επέστρεψε στον κινηματογράφο το 1991 με την ταινία “Ήσυχες μέρες του Αυγούστου”, του Παντελή Βούλγαρη. Η ερμηνεία του είχε πλέον διαφοροποιηθεί, έπαιζε πλέον με χαμηλούς τόνους και έντονη εκφραστικότητα. Κορυφαία στιγμή στην καριέρα του, ο ρόλος του στην ταινία “Όλα είναι δρόμος”, το 1998. Το 1997, εμφανίστηκε στην Επίδαυρο, στο ρόλο του Δικαιοπόλη στους Αχαρνής και το 2001 στην Ειρήνη του Αριστοφάνη. Το 2002, κράτησε έναν από τους βασικούς ρόλους στην τηλεοπτική σειρά “Περί ανέμων και υδάτων”. Το 2010, η τελευταία του συμμετοχή ήταν στην κινηματογραφική ταινία “Το πέταγμα του κύκνου”.
Έφυγε από τη ζωή στις 3 Μαΐου 2011 λίγες μέρες πριν κλείσει τα 84 χρόνια.
Θα μείνει για πάντα γνωστός ως ο “καλός μας άνθρωπος”…
