Τον αντάμωσα τυχαία ένα απόγευμα. Πάνω από δεκαπέντε μέρες είχαν περάσει από τότε που τον είχα δει τελευταία φορά. Τα ρούχα του ήταν βρόμικα και μύριζαν ψαρίλα.
–Τί έπαθες, πού χάθηκες ;
–Δουλεύω σε καΐκι. Ψάχνω για πλήρωμα. Θες να ’ρθείς ;
Έμεινα άφωνος.
–Δε θα κάνεις βαριές δουλειές. Μόνο τιμόνι, βάρδια το βράδυ και κανένα μαγείρεμα. Είσαι ;
Φαινόταν αρκετά κουρασμένος και πολύ ενθουσιασμένος. Πρώτη φορά τον έβλεπα τόσο ομιλητικό και τόσο χαρούμενο, λες κι είχε βρει τη λύση για όλα του τα παιχνίδια, λες και οι σταυροί ήταν πια παρελθόν.
–Είμαι, απάντησα χωρίς να είμαι σίγουρος.
Θυμάμαι, το κόκκινο καΐκι μας ήταν το πιο όμορφο απ’ όλα. Όταν ξεκίναγε να βγει απ’ το λιμάνι, βουτούσε βαθιά τη μούρη του στη θάλασσα λες κι ήταν σκυθρωπό, κι όταν επέστρεφε, η πλώρη του στέκονταν όρθια λες κι ήταν περήφανο για την καλή ψαριά.
