Τα νεανικά χρόνια του Κοραή στο Άμστερνταμ

Οι Τρικυµίες παθών είναι ταυτόχρονα το άγνωστο πορτρέτο του νεαρού
Κοραή, αυτό µιας πολύπλευρης προσωπικότητας, που βιώνει τη σύγκρουση
ανάµεσα σε ό,τι του δίνεται και ό,τι φιλοδοξεί να γίνει. Mε τους δισταγµούς,
την τόλµη, την ευαισθησία, αλλά και το σπινθηροβόλο πνεύµα –ιδιότητες
που έµελλε να συµβάλουν στην κατοπινή εξέλιξη του µεγάλου ∆ασκάλου του Γένους .
Λίγα λόγια για την υπόθεση:
Τον Ιούνιο του 1771 ένας νεαρός έµπορος αποπλέει µε τον βοηθό του από το λιµάνι της Σµύρνης µε προορισµό το κοσµοπολίτικο Άµστερνταµ, όπου θα αναλάβει τη διεύθυνση ενός εµπορικού συνεταιρισµού. Είναι ο εικοσιτριάχρονος ∆ιαµαντής Κοραής, που πέρα από τις εµπορικές δραστηριότητες θέλει απελπισµένα να ξεφύγει από τον ζυγό των Τούρκων, να αναπνεύσει τον αέρα της ελευθερίας και να καλλιεργήσει το πνεύµα του στη «φωτισµένη» Ευρώπη. Ο ίδιος αργότερα θα πει: «Η νεότης µου εσαλεύετο από τρικυµίας παθών». Αυτά τα πάθη περιγράφονται σε τούτη τη µυθιστορηµατική βιογραφία –µια εν πολλοίς άγνωστη αλλά σηµαντική πτυχή της ζωής του Αδαµάντιου Κοραή–, η µεταµόρφωσή του από συνεσταλµένο Ανατολίτη σε γοητευτικό µποέµ κοσµοπολίτη, η έκθεσή του στις ριζοσπαστικές ιδέες λίγο πριν από το ξέσπασµα της Γαλλικής Επανάστασης, η επαφή του µε σπουδαίους διανοούµενους, το πάθος του για µάθηση και η µύησή του στην τέχνη, στον έρωτα και στις απολαύσεις, αλλά και ο σκοτεινός εαυτός του, που θα αποκαλυφθεί όταν φτάσει στα έγκατα της θλίψης και στα όρια των αντοχών του.

Είναι το ίδιο σπίτι, παρά τις αλλαγές στην πρόσοψή του, τον άπλετο φωτισµό, τα δένδρα, την πεζοδρόµηση του χωµάτινου δρόµου, παρά την αποµάκρυνση των στάβλων, το αναγνωρίζει, είναι το ίδιο σπίτι. Μέσα από εκείνο το παράθυρο παραµόνευε κάποτε τον κόσµο, και να που σε µια χρονική αναδίπλωση βρέθηκε εδώ ξανά και βλέπει πάλι τον εσωτερικό διάκοσµο αλλά και το εξωτερικό τοπίο. Ένας τρυφερός χειµωνιάτικος ήλιος πέφτει στο κανάλι.
Μια πλακέτα, δίπλα στην πράσινη πόρτα της εισόδου, γράφει το όνοµά του, γράφει τα χρόνια που έζησε εκεί, τη χρονολογία της γέννησής του και µιαν άλλη χρονολογία, του επόµενου αιώνα, να είναι άραγε αυτή η χρονολογία του θανάτου του;
