Ο Βασίλης Ρώτας ήταν σπουδαίος Έλληνας λογοτέχνης, κριτικός και μεταφραστής.
Γεννήθηκε στις 5 Μαΐου 1889 στο Χιλιομόδι Κορινθίας. Σπούδασε φιλολογία στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών και θέατρο στη Δραματική Σχολή του Ωδείου Αθήνων (1906-1910). κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών του στη φιλοσοφική σχολή γνωρίστηκε με τον Αυγέρη και τον Βάρναλη και μαζί τους πήρε μέρος στους κοινωνικούς αγώνες, όπως εκφράζονταν μέσα από την πόλη, για την υπεράσπιση της λαϊκής γλώσσας. Για το σκοπό αυτό, το 1910, ο Ρώτας μαζί με άλλους προοδευτικούς φοιτητές δημιούργησαν τη “Φοιτητική Συντροφιά”.
Από πολύ νωρίς εκδήλωσε την αγάπη του για το θέατρο. Το 1906, έπαιξε για πρώτη φορά στο θέατρο δίπλα στη Μαρίκα Κοτοπούλη και άλλους ξακουστούς ηθοποιούς. Την ίδια χρονιά έγραψε το πρώτο θεατρικό του έργο “Τ’ αποπαίδια της Μοίρας”. Το 1908, δημοσίευσε τα πρώτα του ποιήματα στο περιοδικό της εποχής Νουμάς.
Το 1910, φοίτησε στη Σχολή Εφέδρων Αξιωματικών της Κέρκυρας. Πολέμησε στους Βαλκανικούς Πολέμους (1912 – 1913) σαν ανθυπολοχαγός. Στη διάρκεια του Α΄ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου υπηρέτησε ως αξιωματικός στο Δ΄ Σώμα Στρατού, το οποίο μεταφέρθηκε στο Γκέρλιτς της Πολωνίας, σε καθεστώς ιδιότυπης αιχμαλωσίας, μέχρι το 1919. Την εποχή αυτή έγραψε Καραγκιόζη και το 1917 τύπωσε την πρώτη του ποιητική συλλογή με τίτλο “Το τραγούδι των σκοτωμένων”.
Πήρε μέρος στη Μικρασιατική Εκστρατεία και για δύο χρόνια (1921 – 1922) υπηρέτησε ως στρατιωτικός ακόλουθος στην ελληνική πρεσβεία του Βερολίνου. Το 1926, αποστρατεύτηκε με το βαθμό του συνταγματάρχη και από τότε αφοσιώθηκε στη λογοτεχνία, τη μετάφραση και το θέατρο.
Το 1920, μέσα στις αντάρες των πολέμων, τύπωσε τη δεύτερη ποιητική συλλογή με τίτλο “Το τραγούδι του Καμπούρη και άλλα τραγούδια και το 1923, την τρίτη συλλογή, το “Ανοιξιάτικο αγέρι”. Το 1927, γοητευμένος από το έργο του μεγάλου δραματουργού, μετέφρασε το “Όνειρο Μεσοκαλοκαιριάτικης Νύχτας του Σαίξπηρ και λίγο αργότερα τα έργα “Βασιλιάς Ληρ”, “Άμλετ”, “Τρικυμία” κα.
Υπήρξε βασικός συνεργάτης του περιοδικού “Ελληνικά Γράμματα” και ιδρυτής του Λαϊκού Θεάτρου (1930-1937), που έκλεισε με την επιβολή της δικτατορίας του Μεταξά. Στη διάρκεια της Κατοχής εντάχθηκε στο Εθνικό Απελευθερωτικό Μέτωπο και πήρε μέρος στην Εθνική Αντίσταση. Την περίοδο της γερμανικής κατοχής οργάνωσε το Θεατρικό Σπουδαστήριο με συνεργάτες τον Μάρκο Αυγέρη, τη Σοφία Μαυροειδή-Παπαδάκη, τον Γιάννη Τσαρούχη, τον Αντώνη Φωκά, τον Μάνο Κατράκη κα. και διηύθυνε τον Θεατρικό Όμιλο ΕΠΟΝ Θεσσαλίας, στα βουνά της ελεύθερης Ελλάδας, με τη συνεργασία ηθοποιών, λογοτεχνών και ελών του ΕΠΟΝ. Έδωσε θεατρικές παραστάσεις στο βουνό και σε χωριά της Θεσσαλίας, πασχίζοντας να φτιάξει ένα θέατρο “από το λαό για το λαό”. Επίσης, δίδαξε στην Επαγγελματική Σχολή Θεάτρου και στη Δραματική Σχολή του Ωδείου Πειραιώς.
Εκτός από την ποίηση του, το θέατρο και τις μεταφράσεις του Σαίξπηρ, ιστορική έμεινε και η μετάφρασή του της κωμωδίας του Αριστοφάνη Όρνιθες για την παράσταση του 1959 από το Θέατρο Τέχνης του Καρόλου Κουν. Ακόμη, ιστορική έμεινε και η συνεργασία του με τον Μίκη Θεοδωράκη, ο οποίος το 1962 κατέθεσε την πρώτη ολοκληρωμένη του μουσική για το νεότερο θέατρο και θριάμβευσε. Πρόκειται για τη μουσική του έργου “Ένας όμηρος” του Ιρλανδού Μπρένταν Μπίαν, τη μετάφρασε του οποίου είχε κάνει ο Βασίλης Ρώτας. Περισσότερα από τα 16 θαυμάσια τραγούδια του έργου τραγουδήθηκαν από τα στόματα εκατομμυρίων Ελλήνων, “Ήταν 18 Νοέμβρη”, “Το γελαστό παιδί”, “Άνοιξε λίγο το παράθυρο”, “Τον Σεπτέμβρη θυμάμαι”, “Είμαι Άγγλος νιος και τυχερός”, “Θα σου στείλω μάνα”, κα. Το έργο πρωτοπαρουσιάστηκε σε σκηνοθεσία του Λεωνίδα Τριβιζά στις 12 Απριλίου 1962 στο Κυκλικό Θέατρο της Αθήνας.
Με την επιβολή της δικτατορίας της χούντας, ο Ρώτας συλλήφθηκε, τιμωρήθηκε για την αντιστασιακή του δράση και εκτοπίστηκε στη Γιάρο.
Έφυγε από τη ζωή στις 30 Μαΐου 1977.
