Η Ζωρζ Σαρή γεννήθηκε το 1925 στην Αθήνα. Η μητέρα της ήταν Γαλλίδα από τη Σενεγάλη και ο πατέρας της από το Αϊβαλί. Τα παιδικά της χρόνια τα έζησε στην Ελλάδα, όπου τελείωσε το δημοτικό και το γυμνάσιο. Πριν ολοκληρώσει τις εγκλύκλιες σπουδές της, άρχισε ο πόλεμος του 1940.
Στη διάρκεια του πολέμου η Ζωρζ Σαρή συμμετείχε στην Αντίσταση και στην ΕΠΟΝ. Περιγράφοντας εκείνα τα χρόνια, η ίδια λέει:
“Τα χρόνια της Κατοχής ήταν χρόνια χαράς και ελευθερίας. Από δυστυχισμένοι γίναμε ευτυχισμένοι. Και αυτό γιατί διαλέξαμε το δρόμο της ζωής και ας υπήρχε θάνατος μέσα. Θρηνούσαμε και χαιρόμασταν όλοι μαζί. Δε φοβόμασταν όμως. Υπήρχε ένας στόχος, η απελευθέρωση”.
Στην Κατοχή, και αφού τελείωσε το σχολείο, άρχισε να παρακολουθεί μαθήματα υποκριτικής στη Δραματική Σχολή του Δημήτρη Ροντήρη.
Τον Β΄ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο διαδέχτηκε ο Εμφύλιος, κατά τη διάρκεια του οποίου η Ζωρζ Σαρή πληγώθηκε στο χέρι και στο πόδι από οβίδα και νοσηλεύτηκε στο νοσοκομείο “Αγία Όλγα”. Αργότερα, το 1947, αναγκάστηκε να φύγει εξόριστη για το Παρίσι. Εκεί δούλεψε σε διάφορες δουλειές., ενώ συγχρόνως φοιτούσε στη σχολή του Σαρλ Ντυλλέν. Στο Παρίσι γνώρισε σημαντικούς ανθρώπους, όπως τον Κώστα Αξελό, τη Μελίνα Μερκούρη, τον Άδωνι Κύρου, τον Μαρσέλ Μαρσό και πολλούς άλλους. Εκεί συνάντησε τον Μαρσέλ Καρακώστα, με τον οποίο απέκτησε δύο παιδιά, τον Αλέξη και τη Μελίνα Καρακώστα, που αργότερα έγινε και εκείνη συγγραφέας.
Το 1962, επέστρεψε στην Ελλάδα με την οικογένειά της και συνέχισε να παίζει στο θέατρο μέχρι την εποχή της δικτατορίας, οπότε μαζί με φίλους της ηθοποιούς αποφάσισαν να κάνουν παθητική αντίσταση και να μην ξαναπαίξουν στο θέατρο. Το καλοκαίρι εκείνο, στερημένη από κάποια μορφή έκφρασης, άρχισε να γράφει το πρώτο της μυθιστόρημα. Ο “θησαυρός της Βαγίας” ξεκίνησε σαν παιχνίδι με τα παιδιά που είχε γύρω της.
Μετά τη μεγάλη επιτυχία του πρώτου της βιβλίου, η Ζωρζ Σαρή αποφάσισε να αφιερωθεί στο γράψιμο:
“Στο γράψιμο βρήκα ό,τι δεν μπορούσα να βρω στο θέατρο, ίσως γιατί δεν ήμουν πρωταγωνίστρια και ίσως γιατί δεν ήμουν σε θέση να διαλέξω τους ρόλους που ο θιασάρχης ή ο σκηνοθέτης διάλεγαν για μένα. Τώρα φέρω ακέραιη την ευθύνη των βιβλίων μου. Κάνω αυτό που θέλω, αυτό που μπορώ”.
Σήμερα το όνομα της Ζωρζ Σαρή έχει συνδεθεί με τη λογοτεχνία του τόπου μας και οι αφηγηματικές τεχνικές και η θεματολογία των έργων της έχουν σφραγίσει τη σύγχρονη ελληνική παιδική λογοτεχνία. Οι προσωπικές τις αξίες, η αγάπη της για τα παιδιά και η “εξάρτησή” της από τη συγγραφή δίνουν το στίγμα του συγγραφικού της έργου, το οποίο υπηρέτησε πιστά ως το τέλος της ζωής της τον Ιούνιο του 2012:
“Όσον αφορά τις δικές μου αξίες, πάνω απ’ όλα είναι η ελευθερία μου και η αξιοπρέπειά μου. Και η φιλία. Να νιώθω ελεύθερη και να είμαι όρθια”.
